Map of St. Augustine, 1778
Map of St. Augustine, 1778
This historic relief (created only two years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence) depicts St. Augustine pictorially and not intended to be geographically precise. It is oriented with due north to the right. Soundings the harbor, inlet and ocean are shown in feet. The Castillo de San Marcos is clearly distinguishable, as are the town’s few streets and its protective walls. Its creators were Italian, resulting in the rivers and landmarks being identified in Italian.
Originally created by Violante Vanni and Giuseppe Pazzi. Reproduced using high-resolution scans of the original 1778 rendering. Measures approximately 12 x 16 inches (horizontal). Printed on heavy, fine art quality paper. Source: State Library of Florida
